Agriculture is the driving force of the economy of Bangladesh. According to Bangladesh Economic Review (BER)-2014 this sector gave 45.1 percent of total labour force (Total 61 million) and contributes approximately 12.27 percent (fiscal year 2014-15) of the GDP. But agriculture workers are mostly underprivileged group of the society. Generally agriculture works is seasonal and transitory, less wage and working environment is unsafe besides they survive to fights with natural calamities and other barriers. Round Table on
Ensuring Decent Work for Agriculture Workers in Bangladesh (March -April)
Bangladesh Labour Welfare Foundation (BLF) in association with Bangladesh Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Foundation (OSHE) organized a round table on “Ensuring Decent Work for Agriculture Workers in Bangladesh” at VIP Lounge, National Press Club, Dhaka on 15 March, 2015. Honorable State Minister, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mr. Md. Mujibul Haque Chunnu MP was present as Chief Guest.
In his Speech, Mr. Mujibul Haque Chunnu said, present government is much aware of the rights of agriculture workers of the country. All essential initiatives have been taken for the development of these people. The condition of agriculture workers is miserable for not getting fare price of crops and for expensive production cost.
Mujibul Haque also stated, Government would take all sorts of initiatives, which actually need for the development of farmers and agriculture workers according to provisions of the labour law. The implementation of the initiatives of government for ensuring development and rights to farmers and agriculture workers by appropriate land management is almost impossible for government individually without the help of mass people and different organizations. Hence everyone should help the government or concerned authority in this purpose. He urged to formulate a law for this working people.
Mr. Mikail Shipar, Secretary of labour and employment ministry said, Government has been taking stern steps against the establishment of housing and industry in agricultural land. The Government has also been thinking of providing maternity allowance to female agriculture workers from labour welfare fund.
Apart from these, the government and development organizations have been taking different development initiatives including modern irrigation facilities, loan without security etc - he described.
Chairman of BLF, Mr. Abdus Salam Khan presided over the seminar while chairperson of OSHE Mrs. Saki Rezwana moderated. President of Jatyio Sramik Leage Mr. Shukkur Mahumd, President of Bangladesh Trade Union Centre Dr. Wajedul Islam Khan, General Secretary of BLF, ZM kamrul Anam, Mrs. Wilma Rousef from FNV Nederland attended the seminar. Representatives from Bangladesh Khet Mojur Samity, BAFLF, Nijera Kori, Bangladesh Bhumihin Samity, BLAST, BBS, PROSHIKA, World Vision, Karmajibi Nari and many others organization joined the event.
Researcher Mohammad Shaid Ullah presented the Keynote paper on problems, rights and others issues related to agriculture workers and recommended several proposals for government and other stake holders.
Lastly, Chairman of BLF, Mr. Abdus Slam Khan ended the program thanking the chief guest, special guests and all participants.
